The Beginners Guide to Baby Wearing

When I first found out I was pregnant, I just knew I wanted to be one of “those moms”. You know, the moms who are super put together all the time. They have a cute messy bun and their sweet baby all wrapped up on their chest. They look adorable and don’t appear to have a care in the world. First trip out of the house with a newborn = reality check.

I realized not only is it incredibly hard to get yourself ready with a very cute, but very needy baby watching your every move. Those baby wrap things are super long, super confusing and everyone wears them differently. To say I was overwhelmed would be an understatement. How do I put this thing on? Am I wrapping my baby safely? How do I dress myself while wearing this wrap?

To help all my fellow mamas out there, I’ve created this beginners guide to baby wearing!

There are TONS of different ways to wrap up your little one. Some babies prefer certain wraps over others and you may find some wraps to be more efficient and comfortable. Don’t be afraid to try out different styles to find what is best for you and your baby! These are two of my favorite ways to wrap that make getting my baby snuggled up on me so easy!

***Side note: These wraps are easiest with younger babies! Please excuse my very wiggly five month old!

  1. Hug Hold (Newborn & Regular)

The Hug Hold is my absolute favorite and my everyday go-to wrap! This wrap can be done with a newborn as well as an older baby! The only difference is with a newborn you would keep the baby’s legs and arms inside the wrap to keep them extra cozy and close to you.

2. Front Wrap Cross Carry

This wrap is another perfect option for every day affairs! My favorite thing about this wrap is that I can secure the tie in the back! This makes it much easier to get things done around the house because the excess is completely out of my way!

As a first time mother, I was constantly worried that I wasn’t wearing my baby safely. After scouring the Internet, I found that there are a few things to check for when wrapping your baby correctly.

  1. Baby should be close enough for you to kiss their head.
  2. Baby’s airway should be completely clear so that baby can breath easily.
  3. The wrap should be snug, but not too tight. Also, any tied knots should be secure.
  4. Baby’s knees should be higher than their bottom.
  5. The wrap should come up to baby’s shoulder blades to give them optimal support.
  6. Baby should never face forward in a fabric wrap.

Being the mother of a newborn, I was super conscious of that extra belly weight and getting dressed to leave the house was an absolute nightmare. The wrap, as useful as it was, squeezed my waist in a not-so-flattering way. In order to get around that, I discovered a few tips and tricks that I have found to be useful for dressing myself while wearing my baby!

Get Matchy, Matchy!

If you are extra self-conscious about how a baby wrap squeezes and pulls on you, I recommend matching the color of your wrap to your attire! Because my wrap is black, I will sometimes wear black shirts or dresses with it! This makes me feel as though the wrap is less noticeable. Also, black is slimming, right?!

Throw Something Over It!

When wearing a baby wrap, you have to make sure it is snug to keep your baby safe and secure! In order to avoid constantly tugging at my wrap to cover my baby weight, I just throw something over the back of my wrap! In the winter, you can throw on a blue jean jacket with a long sleeve tee and booties! In the summer, a lightweight kimono and a tank work great! Even a simple cardigan would do the trick!

Wear Light Layers

Okay, there is nothing more reassuring than your little one cuddled up on your chest at all times! But, it dang sure is hot! No matter the temperature, I often find myself wishing I was wearing thinner clothes! Wearing lighter layers helps prevent some of that sweat that tends to happen when wearing your baby! Light tanks, thin sweaters, and breathable clothing are your best options!

Own it, Girl!

So, you have a little baby weight. Or maybe you have a lot. WHO CARES? You just grew a human and brought them into this world! Don’t pressure yourself to look perfect. You are amazing and strong and beautiful! Rock that baby and carry yourself with confidence because you deserve nothing less!

With love and grace,
